Why are problems hard to solve?
Usually we are unclear about what the problem is. Sometimes we try to solve the wrong problem, or there isn’t a problem at all.
Organisations, without diagnosing the issues, insist on implementing the next new program of ‘improvement’, the latest stage of a ‘Change Management Program’, the next restructure, leadership programs, team building programs, habit improvements, or just the latest fad.
These are all solutions! What was the problem?
In our consulting work, we find the most commonly missed step in any new project, organisational initiative, etc. is that the organisation fails to define what the problem actually is. The next biggest failure is to not scope the boundaries of the problem, and assess how big a risk the ‘problem’ really is. To ask ‘So What?’
Organisations spend huge amounts of money on these solutions! IS THIS WASTE?
Management Drives STARTS by identifying and scoping the behavioural issues underlying the organisation’s problems – usually we start with the organisation’s senior/ executive management teams. Real change is most effective if it starts from the top, where the biggest issues are usually to be found, where there is the greatest power to spend money, to influence the directions of the organisation, and to make decisions.
We work with the executives so at the end we are all clear about, understand and agree what the real problems are, and how important they are. Then the team owns their solutions.
All this happens in ONE DAY.
The solution may well be a leadership course, etc., but until we understand the problem, understand how the solution addresses the problem, and we can see the value in the investment, save your money!
