Individual Performance

The individual’s profile reflects the order that a person applies their drives in his or her perceptions, thinking and actions. The thoughts and feelings of the person will lead to actions. These actions reflect their preferred drives displayed in some equilibrium. In short, the drive patterns in individuals and groups can be used to predict behaviour.
Each of the drives can be displayed in a range of behaviours, from positive action through to negative reactive behaviour.

Clearly there is a world of difference in the performance experienced from a person operating at either end of their spirals.

The degree to which the individual will display positive behaviours (e.g. challenging, inclusiveness, organising)  vs negative reactive behaviours (e.g. self protection, protest and role contraction) will depend on:

  • the match between their  personal profile and the culture of the workplace,
  • their belief in their ability to manage the gap, and
  • enough space to resolve the differences.

The choice will be strongly influenced by the congruence between  the manager’s, the group’s and the individual’s profiles, the tasks they are undertaking, the way the tasks are to be performed, and the requirements of the client.
